GY-SVG Static Var Generator (220V–800V) Overview

The GY-SVG Static Var Generator (SVG) is a high-performance modular reactive power compensator covering AC 220V, 380V, 500V, 690V and 800V three-phase grids, with module ratings from 5 kvar up to 150 kvar and unlimited parallel expansion. Continuously injecting compensating current with a full response time of less than 10 ms, the GY-SVG corrects power factor to ≥ 0.99, balances three-phase loads and stabilises bus voltage — an ideal power-quality solution for industrial automation, wind & solar plants, EV charging, oil & gas, mining, commercial buildings, hospitals and data centers.

How the GY-SVG Works

The GY-SVG connects a voltage source converter (VSC) to the power grid through a filter in parallel with the load. By precisely regulating the amplitude and phase of the converter’s AC-side output voltage, the SVG dynamically generates a leading or lagging reactive current that exactly cancels the reactive demand of the load. Transient response is < 50 µs and full response < 10 ms, which prevents over- and under-compensation typical of capacitor-bank solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the GY-SVG Static Var Generator?
The GY-SVG is a modular Static Var Generator (SVG), also called a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). It connects a voltage source converter (VSC) to the grid through a filter in parallel with the load and dynamically generates leading or lagging reactive current to compensate the reactive demand, balance three-phase loads and stabilise bus voltage. It is built around a DSP + CPLD digital control core with three-level IGBT topology, and is available across five voltage platforms — 220V, 380V, 500V, 690V and 800V — with module ratings from 5 kvar to 150 kvar.
2. What functions does the GY-SVG provide?
The unit is multifunctional and supports selectable operating modes:

  • Reactive power compensation — ≥ 99%, both inductive and capacitive, step-less and bidirectional.
  • Three-phase unbalance compensation — residual unbalance ≤ 5% (220V / 380V / 500V / 690V models).
  • Voltage stabilisation — fast dynamic regulation of bus voltage.
  • Dynamic / impact load compensation — full response < 10 ms suitable for welders, cranes, arc furnaces.
  • Comprehensive protection — overload, overcurrent, over- / under-voltage, over-temperature, short-circuit, frequency anomaly and more.

3. What are the key parameters that affect model selection?

  • System voltage: 220V / 380V / 500V / 690V / 800V — match to the customer’s grid.
  • Grid configuration: 3P3W or 3P4W (800V supports 3P3W only).
  • Required reactive capacity: 5 / 7 / 10 / 17 / 25 / 37 / 50 / 75 / 90 / 100 / 120 / 150 kvar — combine modules in parallel for higher capacity.
  • Target power factor & load profile: determines total kvar capacity and number of modules.
  • Need for unbalance compensation: selectable function (not available on 800V model).
  • Installation environment: indoor temperature, altitude (derate > 2000 m), IP rating (IP20 standard, IP54 optional).
  • Form factor: rack-mount for switchgear cabinets, wall-mount for distributed installations.

4. What options are currently available?

  • Voltage versions: 220V / 380V / 500V / 690V / 800V
  • Capacity per module: 5 – 150 kvar (unlimited parallel)

  • Protection rating: IP20 standard, IP54 customizable
  • Communication: 2× RS485 standard, Wi-Fi supported
5. Which standards does it comply with, and which markets is it designed for?
The GY-SVG is designed in accordance with international power-quality and EMC standards, with altitude derating following GB/T 3859.2. The product supports compliance with IEC 61000 power-quality requirements and typical utility-grid power-factor / voltage-quality codes. With the 220V – 800V product family, it is targeted at industrial, commercial and infrastructure markets globally — including manufacturing plants, renewable energy plants, oil & gas, mining, EV charging, healthcare, data centers, telecom and rail transit across Asia-Pacific, EMEA and the Americas.

6. Installation notes & precautions

  • Connection: The SVG connects in parallel with the load — load current does not flow through the unit.
  • Voltage matching: Confirm the grid voltage class (220V / 380V / 500V / 690V / 800V) matches the selected SVG model — never connect a lower-rated SVG to a higher-voltage grid.
  • Current Transformers (CTs): Use a set of 3 external CTs on the grid side or load side; verify polarity and ratio before commissioning.
  • Ventilation: Maintain clearance around the air inlet / outlet; cooling is forced air with independent ducts. Keep ambient temperature within -10 °C to +50 °C (derate above 40 °C).
  • Altitude: Derate capacity per GB/T 3859.2 above 2000 m.
  • Cable entry: Rear entry for rack-mount; top entry for wall-mount. Follow recommended cable cross-sections and torque values.
  • Grounding: Reliable PE grounding is mandatory for EMC performance and personal safety, especially for 500V / 690V / 800V modules.
  • Parallel operation: When stacking modules, ensure consistent CT signal distribution and matching firmware versions.
  • Commissioning: Configure compensation mode (reactive only / reactive + unbalance) and target power-factor via the HMI or Wi-Fi tool before energizing the load.
  • Maintenance: Periodically clean the air filter; modules are plug-in replaceable to minimise downtime.
