GEYA project | An Italian oil company’s AHF power project

Requirement

In an Italian oil refinery project in Iraq, three 600kW variable frequency drive (VFD) motor units experienced harmonic distortion (THD) rates of 40% to 50% when operating at approximately 50% load. Each motor unit was initially equipped with a 300A harmonic filter cabinet consisting of two 150A harmonic filter modules.

However, because the customer failed to provide power quality test data prior to ordering, the installed harmonic filters, after commissioning, failed to suppress the total harmonic distortion (THD) to the expected target of around 5%. Therefore, an upgrade was required to achieve the desired harmonic control performance.

Solution
Geya’s after‑sales technical team traveled to Iraq to perform on‑site AHF capacity expansion. One additional 150A module was added to each unit, increasing the total AHF capacity from 300A to 450A, thereby enhancing the overall harmonic compensation capability.

Result
After the upgrade, the AHF systems successfully reduced the total harmonic distortion to approximately 5%, meeting the stringent power‑quality requirements of the refinery project. The improvement ensured stable operation of the VFD‑motor units and enhanced the overall safety and reliability of the production system.
