AC Contactor

What is an AC contactor?

AC contactor is one of the most common low voltage control appliances in electric drive and automatic control systems. As an executive element, AC contactors connect and brake lines or control motors frequently. It comprises moving and static primary contact, arc extinguishing cover, moving and static iron core, auxiliary contact, and bracket shell.

After the electromagnetic coil electrifies, the moving iron core is closed under the action of the electromagnetic force, and the moving contact and the static contact are contacted directly or through lever transmission, and the circuit is connected. Once the electromagnetic coil cut off happen, the moving iron core returns automatically under the action of the return spring, which is commonly known as release, contact separation, and circuit breaking.

Do you have an idea of how an AC Contactor works?

Well, its function is simple, to control electricity. Regardless of the type of equipment you are using, it is essential to get an AC Contactor. An AC Contactor can help in managing the flow of current to that specific equipment. For example, let’s take an air conditioner. Without the contactor, the AC will stop controlling temperature. The unit you set it at will blow air at that temperature continuously. GEYA Electronics is proud to announce its whole lineup of AC Contactors, designed using the highest quality control process. Scroll below to find out more!

Types of Contactors We Produce

As explained before, GEYA is manufacturing different AC Contactors. With a total of nine in the lineup, we promise maximum compatibility with your AC units. From household to industrial contactors, there is no doubt that you can install GEYA  almost anywhere. But, the question arises, which AC Contactor to choose? You have to take care of many things, including voltages, to ensure that the product will work flawlessly.

Life of GEYA’s AC Contactors

Usually, these contactors last around five years, but ours easily beat all of them, and according to our extensive testing, these contactors can last up to ten years. That means that after installation, there is a high probability that you won’t have to worry about them for a whole decade. What could be more impressive than that! You may already be aware that an air conditioner features electric motors. It has been designed to power the blowers. Well, that is precisely what GEYA’s AC Contactors control. They limit the current to the engine when the temperature reaches a value.

What is Inside GEYA’s AC Contactor?

Before you ask, GEYA’s AC Contactors are similar to all other contactors on the market. But that is not the focus of the discussion here. Our AC Contactors quickly come out on top after accounting for everything, including the product’s quality control and overall durability. That is what we say with confidence.

Manufacturers made up the AC Contactor of three significant parts. Once you remove the outer shell, you will see the power contacts, the auxiliary contacts and finally, the contactor coils. The contactor coil is responsible for closing the electrical circuit when the room temperature enters the optimal range. In the most basic way, this is what designers used to design this electrical device.

Deeper Workings of the Contactor

If you are a potential buyer, you should not be scared of the engineering behind the product. This section will take an extremely close look into how an AC Contactor works. It is a switch that you can use for switching a power circuit. But what goes on behind the scenes? It is a little bit more complicated.

The Electromagnet

The electromagnet is a coil wrapped around a core, usually iron. The coil is connected at both ends to a movable part, hence creating a spring return mechanism. Manufacturers connect the movable portion to a rod, which moves when the coil voltage exceeds the springs. And when the vice versa takes place, the power circuit contacts disconnect. That is the simplest possible way of explaining the basic principle of the electromagnet. Due to the presence of this mechanism, the system is also sometimes called a magnetic contactor. The name is fitting because of the creation of a magnetic field.

Fixed Contacts

The fixed contacts are the parts responsible for transferring the current. The contactor device can have several different connections, which can differ in the different types of contactors, such as auxiliary ones, power contacts and contact springs.

You cannot see all of the parts mentioned above due to the enclosure. It has one purpose, to protect the real contactor. It also makes handling the product easy, thanks to resistance from dust and constant contact.

Differences between an AC Contactor and a DC Contactor

There are several differences between the two due to them having unique fundamental principles. For example:

  • The core of an AC contactor is silicon sheets, while manufactures make it up of steel in a DC one.
  • The core shape itself is entirely different, with it being of an E shape in an AC Contactor and a U shape in a DC contactor.
  • The operating frequency of a DC contactor is almost double what an AC contactor can achieve.

GEYA’S Line-up of AC Contactors

These contactors are available in many different configurations. Two different lineups focus more on household applications, while manufacturers design the other for heavy-duty industrial use. All of the household contactors are modular, which is something that we will explain in a bit. Regardless of the product you choose, designers designed these AC contactors to be excellent at their job.

The ones used are from AC-1 to AC-23. AC-5, 6, 7, 8 have two variants too and are all designed for different applications. Take the AC-7b, for example. It is meant for use with rotating machines, for example, fans and washing machines. 7a, on the other hand, is intended for small loads such as TVs and drilling machines.

Why Use a Modular Contactor?

Anyone with experience with AC contactors knows that they produce a hum when working. Well, that hum is non-existent in a modular one. That is not the only reason for getting it. Some of the others are:

  • Applications lighting control contactors
  • Controlling electric motors
  • Can be used for attached induction motors

These are some of the countless uses and applications of a modular contactor. The double break contacts divide the connection into two, allowing for more efficient heat transfer. These double break contacts enable the contactor to have a longer lifespan.

Applications of GEYA’s AC Contactor

As a contactor, you can use it to control the current flowing in an electrical device, and there are many applications for it. Some of the common uses are:

Motor Starters

In motor starters, users use AC Contactors in overload relays or short circuit systems. Manufacturers have designed this electrical power circuit to cut off the current supply if the voltage entering is too high for the device to handle. Take a pump starter, for example. You can use GEYA’s AC contactors for protecting it from high loads. If the maximum continuous current rating exceeds, the contactor will trip to protect the motor.

Lighting Control

Lighting control is perhaps the most common application of GEYA’s contactors. One prominent example is timing controlled lighting applications. You can set a timer to control when the lights should turn on. Although there are plenty of industrial applications for it, you can use this in households too. You can still install a manual controller, so you are not locked out of options.

Different Types of AC Contactors

Although we produce one specific type of contactor, there is no damage in sharing all others available on the market with you. Some of the most popular options out there:

Knife Blade Switch

It is perhaps the oldest contactor on the market. With a simple strip and a lever mechanism, the strip pulls the lever up or down, creating or breaking the connection. You could say that an AC contactor is a modern knife blade switch. They do have a significantly less current-carrying capacity as compared to our products.

Manual Contractors

The next-gen after the knife blade switch, which is still widely deployed, is the manual contactor. The manual contractors introduced double break contacts and had a considerably smaller size as compared to their predecessors. They were also pretty safe to use, hence enhancing their lifespan.

Magnetic Contactors

The latest and greatest in the world of contactors is this one. It is the same as a latching contactor but without a latch. It has the smallest size out of the bunch and also has a higher current carrying capacity.

Latching Contactors

A magnetic connector with a twist is called a latching contactor. The only significant difference is that the latch allows the contact to remain in the same position, even if the power is cut. That is great for some applications, such as remembering settings, which remain whenever the power is restored. In layman terms, the switched circuit will remain, regardless of whether there is power or not.

You must note that these last three contactors all have multiple contacts. As manual contactors introduced this, this has been on the latest and greatest versions of the contactor. All have their pros and cons, but there is no reason to settle for anything less than the latest and greatest available on the market. You are getting better features and overall better efficiency. Keep in mind that each generational leap was quite significant. So, choose wisely!

Reasons for GEYA AC Contactors Failing

No product is perfect. But what we, at GEYA, can assure you of is that our products are the closest that we can get to it. Regardless, there are product failures, which can cause frustration for the consumer. The most common reason for them to burn out or overheat is to select the wrong product. If your product is taking in more current than the contactor can handle, it will burn out. Take a fuse, for example. It breaks when a high value of current than its rating passes through it. You can apply the same thing to AC contactors.

That is not the only reason for contactors failing. Some users complain about the current being under the contactor’s limit, but it still blowing. That can be owed to there being too much starting current draw. That must be kept in mind, too, when choosing an AC contactor. When you click Get A Quote on this website, a representative will contact you that knows what they should do. They will be able to guide you properly to confirm which contactor would be perfect for you.

When to Change A Contactor

As you can see, there are various ways for a contactor to fail. The question arises, how can a faulty contactor be identified. Well, the motor will have issues. Regardless of the electronic, let’s take an AC. For example, it will have difficulty starting. And when it does, the climate control feature will not work. The best way is to use a meter, available with technicians, to measure the reading. If they are outside of a specific range, you will need to change them as soon as possible.
